Killybegs

Killybegs, a quaint and picturesque coastal town located in the northwest of Ireland, in County Donegal, is a true gem that is not to be missed. The town is well known for its thriving fishing industry, charming harbour, rugged natural beauty, and warm and welcoming locals. However, there are also a couple of lesser-known gems that are worth exploring when visiting Killybegs – from 2023, for the first time in almost two centuries, the Lighthouses at St John’s Point and Rotten Island will be open to visitors.

At St. John's Point stands a beautiful old lighthouse dating from 1831. Built of cut granite, standing 14m high and 30m above the high water mark, it can be seen for 14 nautical miles. Marking the north side of Donegal Bay, this lighthouse has been a beacon of safety for sailors and fishermen for over 190 years.

Rotten Island Lighthouse, dating from 1838, marks the passage from St. John's Point to the inner channel and past the rocks to the anchorage within Killybegs Harbour. Built of cut granite, standing 14m high and 20m above the high water sea mark, it can be seen for 15 nautical miles.

Visitors can take a guided tour of both lighthouses, where you will learn about their fascinating history, climb the winding staircase to the top, and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding coastline.

Of course, the town's primary attraction remains its thriving fishing industry, and visitors can witness the boats coming in and out of the harbour, and even try your hand at fishing with the locals. The town is also surrounded by stunning natural beauty, with rolling hills, rugged cliffs and lush greenery providing the perfect backdrop for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and bird watching.

Finally, the warmth and hospitality of local people is not to be missed. They are always happy to share stories about their town and the surrounding area, and to make visitors feel at home.

In conclusion, Killybegs is a charming town that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, history, culture, and hospitality. With so much to see and do, it's no wonder that it is considered one of Ireland's hidden gems. Go visit Killybegs Information Centre for more information.
